Dr. Gates graduated from Duke University School of Medicine, where he completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency. He completed a Gastroenterology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic and was an Associate Professor at the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Gates is married to Jennifer Jensen Gates, and has two daughters, Gwyneth and Vivian.
