Salem Gastro Welcomes Dr. Sandi Fields to the Team October 2nd!

September 24, 2024

Welcoming Globally Experienced Gastroenterologist, Dr. Sandi Fields, to Salem Gastro

Salem Gastro is proud to welcome Dr. Sandi Fields, a seasoned gastroenterologist with over 17 years of experience and a unique background that spans both medical expertise and military service. Dr. Fields has served as a Task Force Surgeon and NATO Peacekeeper, providing care in some of the most challenging environments, including Bosnia and Macedonia. Her combination of advanced medical training, research contributions, and global service makes her an invaluable addition to our team.

A Distinguished Career in Gastroenterology and Military Service

Dr. Fields completed her medical education at West Virginia University School of Medicine, followed by her Internal Medicine Residency, Chief Residency, and Gastroenterology Fellowship at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Alongside her medical career, she served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, where she was deployed as a Brigade Surgeon and Task Force Surgeon. Her military service earned her multiple Army Commendation and Achievement Medals, reflecting her leadership and dedication under pressure.

In addition to her impressive service record, Dr. Fields is an active contributor to gastroenterology research. Her work on colorectal cancer screening and CT colonography has been presented at national conferences, and she has shared her expertise on Fox’s “House Calls,” helping to educate the public on conditions like fatty liver disease.

A Commitment to Compassionate, Patient-Centered Care

At the heart of Dr. Fields’ practice is her deep commitment to patient care. She believes in listening to her patients, understanding their concerns, and developing personalized treatment plans. Whether it’s managing reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, or guiding patients through essential screenings like colonoscopies, Dr. Fields’ approach ensures that every patient feels heard and supported.

Q&A with Dr. Sandi Fields:

Q: What inspired you to become a gastroenterologist?
“I’ve always been drawn to problem-solving, and gastroenterology provides a perfect blend of hands-on procedures and long-term patient care. I love the challenge of diagnosing complex GI issues and the reward of helping patients regain their quality of life.”

Q: What unique experiences do you bring to your practice?
“My time as a Task Force Surgeon with NATO gave me the opportunity to provide care in high-stress, resource-limited environments. Those experiences taught me the importance of clear communication, quick decision-making, and teamwork—skills I apply to my practice every day. I also had the privilege of leading teams in complex medical operations, which prepared me for the fast pace and critical decision-making needed in gastroenterology.”

Q: What’s your approach to patient care?
“I believe in partnering with my patients. I take the time to listen, understand their concerns, and work with them to develop a treatment plan that fits their needs and lifestyle. My goal is to make patients feel comfortable, informed, and confident in their care.”

Q: What are some common questions patients ask?
  • How can I manage my reflux? “I recommend avoiding reflux triggers, maintaining a healthy BMI, and using a proton pump inhibitor if symptoms occur more than three times a week.”
  • How do I manage IBS symptoms? “I suggest following a low FODMAP diet during flare-ups, managing stress, and getting enough sleep. Medications like colestipol for diarrhea or Miralax for constipation may also help.”
  • When should I have my colonoscopy? “If you don’t have a family history of colon cancer or polyps, the recommendation is to start at age 45. If you have a first-degree relative diagnosed with colon cancer before age 60, you should start ten years before the age they were diagnosed.”
Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
“When I’m not at work, I love spending time with my family, hiking, and scuba diving. I’m also learning to play the ukulele and speak Spanish, which has been a fun challenge!”

Dr. Fields is Now Accepting New Patients! We are thrilled to have Dr. Sandi Fields on the Salem Gastro team. Her diverse experience, commitment to compassionate care, and dedication to advancing the field of gastroenterology make her an invaluable resource for our patients. If you’re looking for personalized, expert care for your gastrointestinal health, Dr. Fields is here to help.
